Your discoveries
Your discoveries will appear here after you check a word. Explain how each word relates to the root’s meaning.
Discovery quiz
Origin labels show where a word part comes from; some reached English through another language. “Base” means a whole English word. Greek combining forms such as photo- can also be used as beginning pieces in this tray.
Tap prefix cards to fill Prefix 1, then Prefix 2. Tap suffix cards to fill Suffix 1, then Suffix 2. Tap an affix space to choose where the next card goes, or drag directly into it. Empty spaces are ignored; occupied spaces read left to right. Click a filled tray slot to remove that piece. Use Back and Forward in each card group to browse its pieces.

Sign in with ChatGPT to add wordsTwo different meanings of in-
Both prefix families used here come from Latin. They look alike, but their meanings differ:
- Not — negative prefix: inactive means not active; impossible means not possible.
- In, into, or within — location/direction prefix: import means to bring goods into a country; inject means to put a substance into something.
Choose the meaning that fits the word. A changed spelling does not change which prefix family you selected. For example, the im- in impossible means “not,” while the im- in import means “into.” Some modern word meanings are less literal than their historical parts.
How in- changes spelling
Choose the in- (not) tile. It usually becomes im- before b, m, or p, il- before l, and ir- before r. Otherwise it stays in-. This rule applies to words that use this negative prefix; it does not mean every base accepts it.
Try possible → impossible, legal → illegal, regular → irregular, or act + -ive → inactive. The doubled letters come from the prefix plus the base: il + legal, ir + regular. The separate in-/im- cards meaning “in/into” share their own spelling rule and remain distinct from in- meaning “not.”
A saved word’s accepted spelling can handle exceptions or other spelling changes.
How in-/im- (in/into) changes spelling
Either in- or im- can be used to build these words. The tray shows im- before b, m, or p, and in- elsewhere in this starter rule. Try im- + struct + -ion → instruction, or in- + port → import. Both cards check the same saved recipe, so you do not need duplicate word entries.
This family means “in/into,” and is separate from in- meaning “not.” A spelling suggestion does not guarantee that a combination is a real word. Other historical forms and exceptions can be handled through a verified word’s accepted spelling.
Why sub- becomes su- in suspect
Build sub- + spect to make suspect. The prefix takes the form su- in this word, so the b is dropped: su + spect → suspect. The root spect means “look.” Historically, the pieces meant looking up from below; the modern meanings involve suspicion or doubt.
This is a historical spelling change, not a rule for every sub- word. Words such as subsoil keep the b. The game applies this change to verified entries, and shows their accepted spelling.
To add another verified example, select sub-, enter its root and suffix, and save the accepted spelling. When a root starts with s and the saved spelling is su + root + suffix, the tray will show su- and explain the dropped b.
Scoring
The current bank checks words. An unlisted combination may still be a real word; it simply isn't verified here. Teachers can verify and save it above. Piece meanings are clues, not complete dictionary definitions.
Each new word: 1 point for the root, +2 per prefix and suffix, +2 for 7 or more letters. Repeat words earn no extra points. Points and discoveries save in this browser until you reset saved progress or clear browser data.
